The “Penny Wars” was a friendly competition between 7th and 8th Grade to raise money for a toddler in our community who is battling cancer. Rhylie Cates was diagnosed with the the blood cancer, leukemia, last year.  Since this diagnosis, her family has incurred several expenses due to travels to the doctor, food, hotel stays, and medical bills. The Beta Club turned to LMS students to help alleviate some of the expenses. The two grades collected coins: silver, pennies, and bills. Each grade tried to decrease the other grade’s total by placing silver coins into their container. The silver coins decreased the amount; while the bills and pennies increased the amount. The “wars” lasted for about two weeks. After the money and points were counted, 8th Grade was determined the winner. As a result of the competition, LMS students raised nearly $540.00! Rhylie and her mother came to the school and were very happy and appreciative to receive the funds.
